Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov

The House of Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov is usually called simply Romanov. However, Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov is more accurately referring to the second and last house to rule Russia starting with Peter III in 1762 and ending with Nicholas II in 1917.

The original Romanov line died in 1730 with Peter II and the last true Romanovs to rule were his aunts. Peter III was thus officially the first of the house of HGR to rule as his father, Karl Friedrich, was only the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp.

Sounds a bit complicated but it really is quite simple! Basically the original Romanov line died due to no male heirs and the Holstein-Gottorp took over adding the Romanov name to theirs. (^_~)

Starting with Peter III the line of succession was as follows:
